The city is a mixture of historical and natural attractions; and this feature has made the trip to this province pleasant for any tourist. The best time to visit it is Summer, when the weather is cool and great. In spring and summer, in addition to the excellent weather, it’s numerous spas are other features that attract tourists to this area.
The beautiful province of Ardabil, with it’s many tourist attractions and alluring nature, is very popular with domestic and foreign tourists. Sabalan high mountain, the third highest peak in Iran, is located in this province. But Ardabil is not just about nature and the third highest peak in Iran! There are many historical monuments located in Ardabil too. The most famous monument of the city is the tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili. The building has a beautiful and unique architecture and is also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The beautiful province of Ardabil is bordered on the East by the provinces of Gilan and the heights of Talesh; and on the West by the province of East Azerbaijan and on the South by the province of Zanjan. Now if you want to find out where to visit in Ardabil city, keep up!
Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine is one of the valuable historical sites in Ardabil province. Sadruddin Musa, son of Sheikh Safi al-Din built this shrine. In addition to the tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili, the tomb includes other tombs too. Tombs such as Shah Ismail I (the first Safavid king), the mother of Shah Ismail and the tombs of the Iranians killed in the Battle of Chaldoran and some other great men.
The tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili has beautiful decorations and exquisite tiles, Mogharnas and plaster. Exquisite manuscripts with calligraphy of the great masters of the Safavid era, silversmithing, painting and gilding are other attractions of this tomb.
This place has been registered in the list of national monuments of Iran; and also in the UNESCO World Heritage List. And it is also one of the most important sights of Ardabil province.
This museum is located in Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine museum, in a hall named “Chini Khaneh” (house of porcelain dishes). This hall has 1256 containers; and about 100 of the dishes you will find in this containers in the hall, date back to Safavid era.
In these containers you can see the porcelains donated by the Chinese emperor to Shah Abbas I on the occasion of the revival of the Silk Road; and also the porcelain ordered by the Iranian government to China. After arriving in Iran, the porcelain was sealed by the engraved artists in Isfahan; then they sent them to Ardabil to place in the porches of the porcelain hall.
Shah Abbas I chose to live in this hall to rest or relax. After the signing of the Treaty of Turkmenchay, more than 800 chinaware and nearly 4,000 volumes of exquisite manuscripts with many antiques from Sheikh Safi al-Din’s collection were looted by General Paskovich, some of which are on display at the Armitage Museum and another museum in Russia.
Ardabil Bazaar is one of the most important attractions of the province. This bazaar, which is also on the list of national monuments of Iran, was built during the Seljuk period. This Bazaar is the best place to prepare handicrafts and buy souvenirs .
Among all the handicrafts of Ardabil province, we can mention kilim, jajim, carpet, pottery, mosaic and inlay, crochet, pouch and tablecloth. But in addition to all of these, another famous handicraft of the city is Verni. Verni is a type of underlay that is woven by the nomads of Shahsoon Dasht-e Moghan with designs inspired by nature.
And if you are looking for some tasty souvenirs, high quality and famous Sabalan honey, buttermilk, butter, black halva (a mixture of wheat germ and natural butter), local sweets and fatir are some of the famous souvenirs of Ardabil which you can buy from the old bazaar and enjoy!
The Jame mosque of Ardabil is located in Ardabil bazaar complex. This monument was originally a fire temple and dates back to Sassanid era; but this temple changed to a mosque in Seljuk era. And the mosque is one of the most important mosques of Ardabil province and Iran.
Until now we introduced the most famous historical monuments of Ardabil city; but as we said before, Ardabil has a great nature. One of the most famous natural tourism attractions of Ardabil province is Alvares ski slope which is located in Sabalan mountain, 30 kilometers out of one of the most famous cities of Ardabil province, Sareyn.
This ski slope is equipped with lifts and telescopes. Due to the high altitude of the slope above sea level, the temperature of it is even colder than the temperature in Ardabil city; so that even in some summers, you can see snowfall in this ski slope!
Alvares Ski Resort is a winter resort with winters that are more secluded than summers! In winter, the amount of snowfall is so high that the parking lot of the complex is closed due to the accumulation of snow, and you can not park your car there!
After skiing and having fun in Alvares ski slope, don’t forget to go for having a good time and relaxing in one of the hot water springs of Sareyn city.
Sareyn, is the city of hot springs! Sareyn is the most famous city of Ardabil; a small city located in the West of the province. The reason of this fame that Sareyn city has, is it’s amazing hot water springs that being in them gives you a good feeling. But in addition to this, each of these hot water springs are useful in the treatment of rheumatism and joint and nerve pain and that’s the reason they are so important.
Hot springs of Sareyn usually reach temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius and above. They originate from the Northwestern mountains of Sabalan and contain the minerals: bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium and sodium. The oldest springs of Sareyn are “Gavmish Goli” and “Lor Sooi“.
There are a lot of hot water springs in other cities of Iran such as Semnan, Lorestan, Ilam and etc. But hot water springs located in Sareyn, Ardabil are too many and also have the most benefits. There are more than 20 springs to use in Sareyn! In addition to those we named before, the most famous Hot water springs of Sareyn are: 1. Sabalan spring 2. Hotel Royal park spring 3. Aftab complex and 4. Bajilar hot water spring
Lake No’oor is a lake between the provincial border of Gilan and Ardabil, 48 km Southeast of Ardabil and at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level. The lake is a natural lake with freshwater and is in the Western heights of Baghro mountain range. The lake has a species of fish called the rainbow trout. In September, a recreational competition called “Fishing Competition” will be held in this lake among fishing enthusiasts. So if you like fishing, or are a nature lover and want to go camping for a while, this lake an be a nice destination.
Soha Lake is located 35 km East of Ardabil and is one of the tourist attractions of Namin city in Ardabil province. The reason for naming the village of Soha is the existence of springs and abundant water around it, which fascinates every tourist with the beauty of green meadows and sparse forests around it.
The lake is a small reservoir on a dam called Soha, 4 km northeast of a village of the same name. The locals also call this area “Sava“. “Su” in Turkish (which is the main language in Ardabil) means “water” and sava or soha is the plural of water. The village of Soha is located next to the natural water springs and Hazelnut forest (Fandoqloo), one of the attractions of Astara city.
This village is one of the most beautiful tourist areas in Iran. Qarah Yataq village is located in the West of the Caspian Sea, North of Ardabil province and Southeast of Moghan city. This village has a pristine and beautiful nature that shows all four seasons with all it’s beauties. The soaring mountains and it’s scattered forests are in the South, such as Salman Dakhi mountain. In the foothills of Qarah Dagh, there is a mineral water spring that people come to this place from all over the city to use it, and it’s water has a rapid effect in eliminating kidney stones and other diseases.
Living in this village has a long history that has been less studied in written history. The historical monuments in Qarah Yataq village, especially the unnatural hills, pottery and coins obtained in the excavations of Khorsabad and Karvani region, date the settlement in this region to the cave-dwelling period and the existence of natural caves and man-made objects. So if you like this kind of atmospheres we strongly recommend you to visit this beautiful village and enjoy being far from the urban life for a while.
Famous attractions of the village are Gul hammari and Kowl waterfall. The cave of Kowl waterfall shows the existence of life for many years. It is located at 1000 meters below the village and it’s beautiful waterfall is about 20 meters high; and limestone doubles it’s beauty. Willow and oak trees surround it, and a little above of it wild raspberries with great taste and color grows, which attracts many tourists in spring and summer.
