Astara is one of the border cities of Iran and the 6th biggest city of Gilan province. The city has borders with Republic of Azerbaijan from the North; and also, the Caspian sea is located on the Eastern side of it.
Astarachai separates Astara Iran from Astara Republic of Azerbaijan. The main part of the Ardabil-Astara highway is almost parallel to this river and the border line. The city is located on an important highway in terms of communication; It’s Southern route leads to Anzali and Rasht ports; It’s Northern route leads to Astara in the Republic of Azerbaijan and Baku. And it’s Western route, which passes through the Heyran Pass, leads to Ardabil and Tabriz.
As you walk through the alleys of Astara, you will notice the clay roofs of it’s houses. Actually this kind of architecture will get your attention! The roofs, which have a decorative aspect, also make the temperature of the houses cooler in summer; and make this houses have a lower temperature in comparison with other cities with gable roofs.

If you travel from Rasht or Talesh to Astara, 7km before you reach to the city you’ll see an alluring lagoon. That’s Estil lagoon! Estil lagoon is full of Alder trees that have roots in the lagoon and move with the waves. Add to the descriptions the beautiful scenery of distant forests, towering mountains, mild climate and high security of the region.
Those who travel to Astara from the West of Iran or who have gone to Urmia, Tabriz or Ardabil from the East of the country, will see the exit tunnel from Ardabil to Astara on their way. It’s Heyran pass! One of the most beautiful road in Iran. This route overlooks the valley on one side and is limited to the mountain on the other side. At the end of the valley, the cattle graze and at the heights of the bees, they take honey from the nectar of the flowers. There are thousands upon thousands of other hidden effects; and if you are optimistic you will see some of them in a moment of heavy neglect. Yes! Astara sights start from the roads leading to the city and welcome travelers.
Hyrcanian forests of Iran are so famous and even one of the UNESCO Heritage Sites! Bibi Yanloo park is actually a marvelous hyrcanian forests park. The park is located five kilometers from Astara to Ardabil; and it is surely one of the most beautiful parks of Gilan province. Dense oak, beech, alder, hornbeam, maple, cherry, hazelnut and walnut trees make up the plant texture of the park; and the flow of the river in the rocky bed of the forest adds to its power and charm. The facilities of the one-day camp are also provided by providing a bench, pavilion and children’s play area, and all in all, it gives you everything you want from a forest park.
This small river is the natural border between Iran and Azerbaijan; and is filled with whitefish, salmon and many others. If you are good at fishing, we recommend you to go to Astarachai in the right season, because it is possible to easily catch fish for yourself. So go fishing, enjoy the view across the border next to the smoked fish!
The forest has various fruit trees such as hazelnuts, wild apples, green tomatoes, azaleas, berries, raspberries and strawberries. Due to the fact that the hazelnut tree grows more than other species in this forest, this area is called Hazelnut (Fandoq).

If you travel to Astara and visit this place in early July, you can participate in chamomile festival. This festival is held in pastures with an area of several hundred hectares of chamomile. In addition to holding happy music programs and performances by artist groups, in two sections, they held various cultural, artistic and entertainment programs for children, teenagers and different segments of the population. In this festival, the master artists and craftsmen of this region, by producing kilims, musnads, jajims and varnishes, expose the precious heritage to the public.
Of course, the only attraction of this forest is not only it’s chamomile flower plain and the festival; but also the cable car that connects it to the Heyran defile, the ski slope on the grass and next to them the hot spring that is located in this area also makes this forest prosperous and famous among the people.
This cable car is located in the Alborz mountain chain and connects Fandoqloo forest to Heyran defile. It takes about 25 minutes for you to take a round trip by this cable car. The cabins of Heyran cable car always have a cool temperature and if you are not a fan of cold weather we recommend you to travel to Astara and get on this cable car in Summer or late Spring.
It is not possible to go all this way to the North of Iran without saying a word about the sea! Fortunately, among the sights of Astara, there is a beach that has no internal competitor in terms of cleanliness, facilities and security, and responds to every taste. The water is extremely clean, there are restrooms on the beach and you can set up tents on them. The presence of lifeguards is tangible, and there is also a suitable children’s play area.
All in all, if the beaches, like hotels, were starred; Astara beach is five stars! If you want to collect oysters on this beach and go swimming it, you should find a way to the sea ten kilometers from Astara to Rasht.
The best time to travel to Astara is in Spring and Summer. The only reason is that the city is humid and rainy most days of the year, as it is located in a mountainous climate with a humid climate; And it has a more pleasant weather during the two first seasons of the year.
