As we said before, Gorgan city has both nature and history. This means that there are plenty of historical sights to visit in addition to the natural tourism attractions. The historical texture of Gorgan city, with an area of 150 hectares, is the third valuable texture in Iran. It has an architectural style that counts valuable after Yazd and Isfahan. And it is also the widest historical texture in Northern Iran. The historical context of this city was registered in the list of national heritage of Iran in 1931, the boundary of which corresponds to the Qajar boundary of Astarabad.
The old texture of Gorgan city consisted of five gates. And these gates (the intersection of different roads) can show the causes and growth of the city. The old texture of this city consists of a set of residential neighborhoods and neighborhood centers. That they have spread East and Southeast. We can consider the old historical texture of Gorgan city, as the most unique texture of Iran.
Gorgan Museum Palace, also known as Gorgan Royal Palace or Gorgan Private Palace, was one of the 12 palaces of the Pahlavi dynasty in the country and the residence of this family in the region. In the first Pahlavi period under the order of Reza Shah , they built this amazing building.
This place is known as the first museum of the Northern region. It is also the 24th museum of the country and the fourth specialized museum of archeology in Iran. They keep statues of 30 prominent figures of Golestan province along with relics from the Pahlavi era for public display in this place. This place is one of the national monuments of Iran since 1967.
This Mosque is one of the buildings of the Seljuk period. It is located in the traditional and old bazaar of Nalbandan in Gorgan; and Turkmen architects built it. The grand mosque consists of a central courtyard in the form of four porches and four naves. And the decoration shows the special architectural decorations of that period: a combination of bricks and seven-colored tiles.
During various periods of the Timurids, Safavids and Afshari they renovated this historic mosque and it’s naves; and there are now a number of inscriptions on the West porch that testify to this claim. This mosque is 1,200 years old and there are inscriptions in Kufic script on it’s minaret. Also, you can see the date of 859 AH (1455 AD) on the wooden pulpit of this mosque. One of the most prominent features of Gorgan Grand Mosque is it’s historical minaret.
The only surviving part of Seljuk architecture is the minaret of the mosque. The material of this minaret are brick and written in Kufic script. Above the minaret there is a place where the muezzin can stand and say the call to prayer.
This minaret has an inscription on which the information is in Pahlavi and Kufi languages. The top of the Kufic text is adorned with beautiful bricks that are repeated in the form of a strip around the minaret. Part of the minaret is open in it’s brickwork composition and performs the act of lighting into the minaret. The minaret is built in a quadrangular shape above the minaret of the mosque.
Nalbandan Bazaar is one of the sights of Gorgan. This bazaar has the Gorgan Grand Mosque in it; and it has exactly the characteristics of the original Northern bazaars of Iran. Colorful and fresh fruits and vegetables, various fish that give a special aroma and feeling to the market and the sale of copper dishes and cloth in shoemakers have created a pleasant feeling in the local environment.
One of the historical attractions of Gorgan is Rebat Sefid Caravanserai. This caravanserai is 49 km from Gorgan in the direction of Tokestan tourist area. This caravanserai was built during the Safavid ear and is still well preserved. The width of the entrance gate, which at first glance probably fascinates you, is about 3 meters. Next to this caravanserai, there is a spring that has very cool water all year round, even in hot seasons.
In most Iranian cities, there are surviving houses from ancient times. Taqavi House is one of these valuable old houses in Gorgan city, which is also very spectacular. This house dates back to the Qajar period. The owner of this house was a person named Mirza Mohammad Taqi Taqavi.
Mirza Mohammad Taghi’s house has about 2000 square meters of land and 10 main and secondary courtyards. This attractive and beautiful house has several basins and it is built in the form of a pergola mansion. The pergola mansion is a building or structures that are built in the middle of the garden or yard; and they usually has a decorative masonry.

Of course, many parts of this wall have been destroyed these days; but it can still be considered as one of the sights of Gorgan.
This wall has been nationally registered and people know it by different names. The most other names of this wall are Alexander Dam, Pirooz Dam, Anoushirvan Dam and Sassanid Red Snake. The defensive wall belongs to the Sassanid period. This shows that it is about 2,000 years old! This wall starts from the Caspian Sea in Gomishan area and continues to the mountains of Glidagh in the Northeast of Golestan province.

Naharhoran is one of the most famous sights of Gorgan and one of the most beautiful forests of Iran. This jungle is very beautiful and is spectacular in any season and at any time. The heights of this forest with many valleys, streams and ridges, is a suitable environment for nature lovers and mountaineering enthusiasts. The West and Southwest heights of Naharkhoran Square are the main way to climb Sefid Cheshmeh and higher altitudes. You can access these heights through the old stone steps in Naharkhoran jungle park.
This waterfall is a moss waterfall an one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the North of Iran. This beautiful waterfall is located 18 km from Gorgan and along the Shast Kola river. Barankooh Mossy Waterfall has a sloping waterfall path; and if you want to see the crown of this waterfall, you need to climb this mountain with mountaineering equipment.
The water you are watching is supplied by springs above the waterfall. The part that guarantees the beauty of this area is the fur-covered rocks around this waterfall, which will probably amaze you with its beauty at first sight. This waterfall, also known as Firooz Mahal, is one of the tourist attractions of Gorgan city and is in Shast Kola forest, 22 km Southwest of Gorgan. To reach this waterfall, you have to go through a dense forest. Along the way you can see a variety of toxic and non-toxic mushrooms. We can consider it as the beauty of the way!
Shast Kalateh waterfall is formed by crossing the 43 km Shast Kola river through the valleys and forests of Jozbando mountain. Of course, this waterfall is not the only waterfall along the river. You can find other waterfalls such as the Barankooh waterfall that we mentioned earlier in this area.
Alangdere forest is one of the most spectacular places in Gorgan. This spectacular place is near Naharkhoran forest. Space is still the space of forests, river and springs. Alanagdereh has a pleasant climate. So if you visit there in Summer, you will easily feel the temperature drop by about 10 degrees.
This beautiful forest park is next to a river called Qalashi, which has three springs next to it. Alanagdereh, like Naharkhoran Forest Park, offers picnic amenities. On the Northeastern slopes of Alborz and between Gorgan and Shahroud, you can travel among one of the most beautiful forest roads in Iran! Approximately 13 km after Gorgan, a road to the South branches off, which is named “Tuskestan” because of the first village of this road; A 30 km long road that passes through several spectacular and summery villages. This beautiful forest, which borders neighboring worldview forests, is part of Hyrcanian Park, which has recently become a national park. Do not forget the warm clothes when you visit this forest. This area gets very cold in autumn and the probability of rain is high.
