Persia, the ancient Persian name of Iran, boasts to be the world’s most superior culture in carpet manufacturing. The art of weaving and dying is inherited; and weavers make carpets of all styles here. A Persian carpet or Persian rug, is a heavy textile that is made for a wide variety of utilitarian and symbolic purposes. Persian rugs weaved in Iran, are available for home use and decoration, local sale, and export.
Carpet weaving is an essential part of Persian culture and Iranian art. Within the group of Oriental rugs produced by the countries of the so-called “rug belt”, the Persian carpet stands out by the variety and elaborateness of its manifold designs.
The carpets manufactured in the country, are often named after the area where they are made. For example: Hamadan, Mashad, Kerman, Shiraz and Bijar. People also name the carpets after different ethnic groups like the Qashqais.
In parallel by nomadic tribes you can see Persian carpets and rugs of various types weaved. As such, they represent different, simultaneous lines of tradition, and reflect the history of Iran and its various peoples.
The carpets waved in the Safavid court manufactures of Isfahan during the sixteenth century are famous for their elaborate colors and statistical design. These rugs are now in museums and private collections all over the world as treasures. Their patterns and designs have set an artistic tradition for court manufactures which was kept alive during the entire duration of the Persian Empire up to the last royal dynasty of Iran.
TEHRAN – Iran exported over $560 million worth of handmade carpets to 80 countries in 2018, ISNA News Agency reported. According to the Customs Administration data, the carpet exports rose by 0.8 percent in value; but decreased by 15.4 percent in weight, compared to the year before.
If you have been thinking about getting handmade Persian rugs as decorations for your house, then there are some things you should know before you start to buy:
Quality Persian rugs are available; but you need to know what distinguishes quality Persian rugs from all other handmade Persian rugs. Quality Persian carpets have the best materials. The type of wool, cotton, or silk, threads used to weave the Persian rugs usually have better quality and craftsmanship compare to rug made in different parts of the globe.
The dyes that weavers use when they are coloring the fibers for the rug, help to decide if the carpet will be of high quality or not. Some dyes vanish or bleed as they get wet; and some other are steadfast. The higher quality the dye is the higher quality the carpet it colors will be. Some weavers use only natural ingredients to make their dyes for their pieces.
These rugs will sometimes fade somewhat over time, but they tend to take on a warmer look as they fade. They actually look better as they fade and age than they did when they were first crafted.
Art is the best language for international communication and showing the culture. Persian carpet is very famous in whole of the world. But if you like to touch this unique Persian culture and feel it truly, you should travel to Iran and visit Tehran carpet museum. The museum first opened in1976; and it’s library contains 7,000 books. So if you ever visited Tehran don’t forget to visit Tehran carpet museum and enjoy seeing beautiful Persian rugs there.
