There are two types of tourist visas you can obtain in order to travel to Iran. Standard tourist visa and visa on arrival (VOA). Standard visa has been issued before you travel to Iran and you can obtain it from one of Iran’s embassies.
If you are going to obtain tourist visa, it must be obtained before your travel, this visa is valid for 90 days from the issue date.
Visa on arrival (VOA) or airport visa will be given to you in the airport upon arrival. Fees depend on which country you are from, this visa is issued for 30 days from arrival date and it is receivable in International airports such as Tehran Imam Khomeini airport (IKA), Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz, Mashhad, and Kish international airport.
In few past years, Iran has been a popular destination for tourists, specially backpackers. Visa on arrival is very popular and easy because it will save you from exhausting process of embassy interviews and invitation letters.
You cannot apply Iran visa on arrival from land borders and it is only receivable from international airports in Iran. The process of getting visa on arrival is so easy and except people who are from US, UK, Canada, Colombia, Somalia, Bangladesh, Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India everyone can obtain this visa.
If you are from America or Canada you have to have a licensed travel agency as your guide through your entire trip.

To obtain Iran VOA, you have to have a valid passport with at least 6 month validity, visa fee in cash, your travel/medical insurance and a photo to be attached to your visa application form. Although visa officers use a digital camera and it won’t be a problem if you don’t have your photo with you, but if you have it prepared it can make the progress faster. Female travelers picture should be with Hijab.
The flat fee in the process of obtaining an Iran visa is 60$ and the second cost depends on your nationality, on average an Iran visa costs between 50$ – 165$.
Sometimes you may have to have your invitation letter or hotel reservation voucher with yourself, you can ask for an invitation letter from an Iranian travel agency or friend.
Remember, as credit cards such as master card, visa card, american express and etc. doesn’t work in Iran, bring cash for the whole length of trip.
On the border of Iran, you will be asked if you already have Iran visa or want to get a VOA. In case of VOA, you have to tell your nationality and fill up an application form. You pay your visa fee in cash and then deliver your receipt, passport and application form and to the visa officer and wait till they call your name. The process can take between 20 minutes to 2 hours, when your turn comes they will call your name and return your passport with your visa on it. Your visa has validity till 30 days after the date of your arrival.
