As no international banking card works in Iran, due to the sanctions, you have to bring cash with you. It’s easier to change USD and Euros to Iranian Rial, than others.
The official unit of currency in Iran, is the Iranian Rial; but Iranians almost always talk in terms of Tomans: a unit equal to 10 rials.
Apart from some hotels, carpet shops and tour agencies, where you can pay in Dollars or Euros, all transactions in Iran are in Rial.
The most Common bank notes you can find in Iran are in the value of 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000, 100000, 500000, 1000000 Rials; and also you can find coins in the value of 1000, 2000 and 5000 Rials.
You can find exchange shops in the city. Some maybe located near your hotel or near bazaars, specially in Tehran.
Ferdowsi square is the main center for money exchange in Tehran.
You will find exchange markets in Karim Khan square in Shiraz city. in front of Yazd’s fire temple and Imam Khomeini street, in Yazd, you can find some exchange shops.
If you are looking for exchanging money in Isfahan, Sepah street and Nezami street are the main centers of money exchanges.
In some big cities such as Tehran, you may see some people outside the hotels or exchange centers who will suggest you to exchange money. But we recommend you not to rely; and change your money in agiotages. Don’t forget to receive an official receipt for it.
