There are three main ways to move from a city to another in Iran: Airway transport, railway transport and road transport. Water transport isn’t available in the country cause there aren’t rivers that connect cities to each other, but if you are planning to visit islands which are located in Persian Gulf, you may need to travel a distance with boat.
All big cities of Iran have at least one airport, you can get a ticket at all airports in Iran or you can book your ticket at travel agencies or book a flight online. If you use airway transport, you can save a lot of time but it will cost more than other available ways of transportation in Iran.

You can use train if you want to travel from a city to another cause the majority of cities are connected with one another through the railway.
You will enjoy more comfort using railway transport in comparison with road transport (buses or taxis) and you can save money on your trip compared to when you are using air freight.

If you want to move in the city with a low cost transportation service, subway is the best choice for you the ticket costs between 8000 – 12000 IRR (0.66 $ – 0.1 $). But only some major cities are facilitated with subway system. In addition to saving money, you can reach to most parts of the city so much faster using subways, specially in a crowded city like Tehran. Though the subway is so crowded during rush hours (7-9 A.M, 4-7 P.M) but if you have the problem of limited time, it is the best choice for you. If you are going to stay in the city for a long time and are planning to use subway services for more than once it is easier to use e-tickets which you can buy at the station with a price starting from 70000 IRR (0.5 $) and you can charge them up to 500000 IRR (4.16 $) and use them as long as you want.
Tehran Metro is a rapid transit system in 7 lines which is also connected to Karaj’s subway. Metro services run from 5:30 A.M to 23:00 P.M throughout the city. Keep in mind that in Tehran, the subway tracks are connected with Mehr’aabaad airport, Imam Khomeini International Airport, and also the terminals of west and south of Tehran.
The Tabriz Metro has one line in six stations which runs Northwest from El Goli Station to Ostad Shahriar Station.
Road transport in Iran between the cities of Iran takes place in two ways: you can travel using bus or taxi. Some major bus terminals have buses or mini buses to smaller towns and at the same stations you can see taxi’s going to different destinations that of course they cost more than buses. and for daily transport in the cities there are buses and different kinds of taxis available for you, or you can choose to ride a bicycle and if you haven’t brought one, there are bicycle stations in Tehran, that by registering you can borrow bikes for as long as you want 24/7.
Bus transportation is available in all cities of Iran and rapid transit system is available in big cities such as Tehran, Mashhad and Tabriz. In order to escape traffic, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is the best choice and also there are other ordinary bus services covering paths which are not covered by BRT. In order to use BRT you have to have an e-pay ticket which you can buy and charge in metro stations or the bus stations and use them for both subway and bus but if you are going to use ordinary buses, it is available to pay with money too. The cost of bus tickets are 15000 IRR (0.12$).
Tehran BRT is working in 10 different lines 24/7 and it covers most important streets of Tehran such as Vali-easr street. The BRT lines are working in separate line specified for buses and that’s how you can easily scape from traffic, specially during the rush hours.
In Iranian buses, men and women enter and exit through separate gates, in other words there is gender segregation in the buses.
VIP buses are used for traveling between two different cities and you can buy the ticket form major terminals of every city. Also there are mini buses available for shorter distances, they cost less and they are used if you are less than 20 people so if you are traveling with a group of people they can be a good choice for you, and of course they are less comfortable in comparison with VIP buses.
Taxis are widely available in every city of Iran. There are different kinds of taxis available in Iran, taxis in Iran always move with four passengers, one sitting in the front and three in the back. You can also take private taxis too but it will cost more.
Taxis are equipped with taxi meter and you will be charged on the basis of the distance you cover by the taxi.
There are van taxis and online taxis available in Iran, there are also some agencies where you can call them and they’ll send you private car or you can dial the number 133 in order to get wireless taxis.
There is also a special taxi for ladies, which are available in big cities. All the drivers are women and they will accept lady customers only. You can reserve a taxi by calling them at 1814 or on some online apps like Snapp.
At terminals, you can find taxis which you can travel between the cities with them, you will pay more than bus but you will arrive at your destination faster.
There are two online taxi service companies in Iran, Snapp and Tap30, which are considered the largest ones in their own kind. The advantage of this taxi services is that they are available 24/7 and it’s pretty useful in cities like Tehran where there is no life time in. You need to download and install the applications relevant to these online taxi services on your smartphone and use them to call for a taxi.
Vans are a sort of taxi which are used as public means of transport in Tehran and some other major cities. The only difference is that they start their trip with 10 passengers. And there is a difference between the fee of the ordinary taxis and vans, yet you need to wait for some minutes more until they are fully loaded and ready to hit the road.
