Laser resurfacing or Photorejuvenation is a skin treatment that uses lasers, intense pulsed light, or photodynamic therapy to treat skin conditions and remove effects of photoaging such as wrinkles, scarring, blotcher, stretch marks, spots and textures.
Your skin layers will be removed with laser, the new skin cells will give your skin a younger and healthier look. It can be combined with another cosmetic surgery such as liposuction, to help tighten and smooth over the new contours after removal of excess fat.
This method was invented by Thomas L. Roberts in 1990s using CO2 laser.
Laser resurfacing or Photorejuvenation will usually take between 30 minutes – 2 hours depending on the using techniques and the size of the area. To protect your eyes the surgeon will give you special glasses or ask you to close your eyes and then numb your skin with local anesthetics. The process is usually accomplished in surgeon’s office.
Don’t forget to review you medical history with your dermatologist and stop taking medications at least for two weeks before and after the process.
Depending on the problem that was treated complete recovery will take 10 – 21 days. After the procedure, the surgeon will bandage the treated areas and you can open the bandage after 24 hours. After that, cleaning the treated areas for about 4 or 5 times a day is needed. To prevent scabs from forming, your dermatologist will recommend you to apply ointments such as petroleum jelly. As you know, smoking will protract the healing process. So If you smoke, quit smoking for about 2 weeks before and after the procedure to ease you recovery time.
For about 12 to 72 hours after the procedure your skin may feel itchy or stinging, which is normal and you shouldn’t worry about. Swelling is also normal, you can apply ice packs and it’s better to sleep on extra pillow at night to ease swelling. 5 to 7 days after Photorejuvenation, your skin will become dry and peel, keep your skin clean and well moisturized. Once the skin heals, you see it’s lighter than the other parts and the redness won’t completely fade for 2-3 month. You can wear oil-free makeup to minimize the redness and don’t forget to use “broad-spectrum” sunscreen. A “broad-spectrum” sunscreen, screens ultraviolet B and ultraviolet A rays and it is necessary to protect your skin because the cells are vulnerable.
A fractional laser (FP) delivers tiny pinpoints of laser light to a part of the skin. Hundreds or thousands of laser pinpoints may be used per square inch, leaving healthy skin between the ablated areas, to allow more rapid healing and lower risks.
FP may provide similar results to CO2 laser resurfacing without risk of scarring or significant downtime.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses flashlamps (and not lasers) to produce high intensity light over broad visible and infrared wavelengths with filters that select the desired range. IPL is used to treat dyschromia, rosacea, melasma, acne, photodamage, vascular and pigmented lesions, and rhytides.
Asking about the cost of a surgery is the most common question among patients. Every one is worried about costs and want to know whether insurance will cover the costs or not.
As laser resurfacing is known as a cosmetic surgery, unfortunately medical insurance wont cover it. But there may be an exception if you get the procedure to modify scars or remove precancerous growths on your skin. In this case you have to get in touch with your health insurer and make sure if they will cover the costs or not.
The price is changeable depending on where the procedure is being done, how complicated is your treatment and the surgeon’s fees. In some countries you can find the process performing cheaper than the others. But how can you make sure you are going to get high quality services?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons laser resurfacing costs about 2330$ per session in USA, while this number is between 400$ – 700$ in Iran.
|Price||400$ – 700$||2330$||672$ – 3723$||502$ – 1500$|
